Big coifs. Long lashes. Sparkling gowns. And, of course, hair-raising vocals. Toni Braxton hits all the notes of what a living legend is. But, her latest appearance is proof she knows exactly what they look like, too. While in Philadelphia for The New Edition Way tour, Braxton took us back to a decade where chanteuses reigned supreme: the 1960s.
Her style appeared to be a recollection of a sixties Diana Ross and The Supremes by way of Dreamgirls (2006). Like the dress on the film’s cover, the singer wore a custom blue Liastublla gown with a slit so high it exposed her matching underwear and a pair of thigh-high fishnets underneath. She sung into her glove-gripped rhinestoned microphone (with her signature rhinestoned on a plaque on the stand) which set the tone for the night.
However, it was her iconic hair that stood out against it all. Braxton’s dark old Hollywood ‘do was coifed by celebrity hairstylist and wig maker Marie Brown. The shoulder-length hair, down to a bang draping over one eye, was reminiscent of The Supremes, who were known for their short, yet voluminous bouffants. The front was brushed and blown out while the ends were curled for extra volume and paired with big lashes and a nude lip.
At a time when short hairstyles are trending, the glamour of the sixties has never been forgotten. Over 60 years later, Toni Braxton is living proof that that’s what makes someone legendary: a classic style that just never gets old.
