“I always tell people when you start with your interior design, start with what you love—not what’s trendy or what someone else is doing,” New York-based content creator Rene Daniella Askew tells Essence in the latest episode of Homestyle. “I really took creative freedom and free will, and went room by room, curating my space to be for the woman I aspire to be.”
Throughout her home, bold textures like cool Calcutta Marble and vibrant accents blend to create an eclectic, intentionally designed atmosphere. “I wanted everything to have an element of joy and playfulness,” she says.
Striking artwork, sourced from Nigeria, also adds depth and intrigue to her sanctuary. “I’ve been to over 65 countries. When you walk into this house, I want you to feel a little inspiration from each of those [places],” she explains. But you don’t need a passport to bring her style home. The jewel-toned vases that brighten corners of her space, the patterned rug anchoring her “cloffice,” and the decorative pillows tossed across her bed are all finds from the Temi Coker x Walmart exclusive home collection.
Inspired by the designer Temi Coker’s Nigerian heritage and journey from Lagos to Dallas, the home line features accessible pieces that instantly energize a space while giving it a premium feel. In Rene’s carefully curated home, these additions make every room look as though it could grace the pages of Architectural Digest. Yet she admits she has zero interior design background. “I wouldn’t even say I’m particularly artsy, but as a content creator and influencer, I knew when I bought this house that each room needed its own personality and its own vibe.”
Rene’s approach to design is deeply personal, yet she hopes her home serves as inspiration for women everywhere looking to create spaces that reflect them.
